2011 has a macabre newborn place in the achievement books: the deadliest assemblage for tornadoes in more than five decades, with 481 grouping killed by the storms as of this writing.

It's the maximal variety of fatalities from tornadoes since 1953, when twisters killed 519 people, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the bag authority of the National Weather Service. [Related: Why Tornado Forecasting is Tough]
